In ‘Banana Harvest and Fireflies, Costa Rica’, Cornish artist John Dyer brings together memories and studies from his Costa Rican expedition to create a vibrant large scale painting that radiates warmth, colour and life. Painted for his Spirit of the Harvest exhibition at the Eden Project, this work celebrates the abundance and biodiversity of the Caribbean rainforest.

Fireflies drift through the humid night air, circling the banana flowers that stand vibrant and central to the composition. Scarlet macaws perch high on luminous branches while a sloth rests peacefully nearby. A toucan surveys the moonlit beach below, where people enjoy the gentle curve of the shoreline beneath a deep indigo sky. Bats trace arcs above the sea as tropical hibiscus and broad cheese plant leaves frame the scene in vivid greens and glowing orange and humming birds seek out tropical blooms.

Inspired by direct observation in the rainforest and the small holder banana harvest along the Caribbean coast, Dyer transforms his experience into a jubilant expression of connection between people, wildlife and the land. The result is a joyful celebration of Costa Rica’s natural world — a painting alive with light, movement and hope.
