Original Painting by Joanne Short. 'Royal Plants at the Hanbury Palace Garden, Giardini Hanbury'. La Mortola, Italy.
The Hanbury Palace is in the Hanbury Gardens, La Mortola, just across the French border on the Italian Riviera. Sir Thomas Hanbury purchased the land in 1867 after sailing past and spotting the perfect spot for a grand villa and garden. In this painting, we can see that the gardens continue to flourish, with amazing sculptural plants clinging to the hillside above the Mediterranean.
For two years, Joanne Short shared a studio at La Mortola with John Dyer. The artists produced many exciting paintings based on the Giardini Hanbury and exhibited them in Monaco. You can read more about this in our blog posts.
