'Colourful Potato Fiesta on Taquile Island, Peru'. 35.5 x 35.5 inches acrylic on canvas. Painting of Peru by John Dyer
NB: Previously exhibited in Spirit of the Harvest at the Eden Project. Now sold, and replaced with a new painting on display at Eden.
‘Colourful Potato Fiesta on Taquile Island, Peru’ celebrates the joy of harvest on Lake Titicaca. Families gather on bright textiles to sort a dazzling array of biodiverse potatoes, their colours echoed across terraced fields that tumble to the water. Llamas with tassels stand watch, guinea pigs scurry between the cloths, and bell-like flowers frame the scene. John Dyer’s confident, expressive brushwork captures movement, music and community, painting a vivid sense of place where people, animals and landscape are closely connected.
This major new canvas draws on the artist’s fieldwork in Peru with the International Potato Center during the United Nations International Year of the Potato. Travelling to the Andes to paint on location, Dyer explored how Quechua communities safeguard crop diversity for resilience and food culture. That experience informs every mark here, from the lively figures at work to the richly patterned blankets and the many forms and colours of the potato itself. As part of Spirit of the Harvest, this uplifting work brings the warmth and rhythm of Peru into a home or collection, offering both daily joy and long-term significance for collectors of contemporary art.
